OUTER HEBRIDES BY BIKE -day 4- TARBERT TO SHAWBOST

only in the morning we truly realised how great was the decision to stay overnight in tarbert and do not force ourselves against 27mph head wind of previous afternoon and evening!
we woke up early (i start seeing a pattern in this!) and when left the hostel we realised that it's already midge season :) never encountered them before on this trip as there's always been a bit of a breeze haha but that morning was so calm :)
i think that all of us were focused on the day's challenge - cycling north harris involves one very nasty ascent, around an cliseam. we all dreaded it a bit and believed that we are to push bikes for miles and miles haha
eventually the ascent proved not too bad, dont get me wrong, we all pushed bikes at one point, at the very beginning where the road suddenly steepens and turns sharply. but after this bit we got back in saddles and cycled on without much problem. it was actually much easier than i expected, i even think that the hill south of tarbert (previous day) was more of a struggle than clisham.
when we finally reached the highest point the views were fantastic, hearts lighter and legs sore :) but what an uplifting moment- sunshine, sense of achievement and green rugged mountains of harris.
and what a pleasure to speed down the hill on the other side :) in no time we were already clicking photos with 'welcome to isle of lewis' signpost.
bye harris, you were fantastic :)
at first southern lewis was pretty much continuation of harris' views- ever visible clisham, rolling hills, green and green everywhere, little lochans, little woodlands. fantastic. and i believe we saw an eagle twice too :)
very soon we reached the junction with A858 where we turned west, towards Callanish.
the road was still rather hilly, completely straight and we could see moorland and lochans for miles... as well as mr clisham, he hardly left us that day :)
finally we arrived to callanish, thanks goodness there is a visitor centre with hot food and cakes (which we enjoyed a lot!) never mind the standing stones haha
it felt to be a 'meeting point' as while we stayed at visitor centre we met most of the fellow cyclists (who we have already met previous days in most places of interest really). there is a limited number of roads on hebrides  therefore limited possibilities and so we met the same people, some of them every day :) like the Swedish lady, or Lucy from Devon, or the French couple, or the Dutchman, or the weird family from the ferry..
anyway, we stayed at the standing stones for about 2 hours, weather was fantastic and we only had another 20k to ride which somehow seemed nothing.. when we set for the road again we were well rested, enthusiastic and ready for it :) indeed, remaining 20k passed very quickly, to the degree that we stopped 2km before our destination, shawbost, to try to swim in lochan and prolong the day... i personally regretted that the ride was over that day. and we cycled some 80km/54m that day but it was so fantastic (weather and views) that we couldnt get enough :)
finally when we rode into the campsite we were greeted very warmly -of course, the Swedish lady announced arrival of 3 polish girls (that's how we were known, even though Lucka is Czech..) so when 3 girls rode thru the gates everybody already knew who we were :)

.

dopiero rano zdalysmy sobie sprawe jaka to byla dobra decyzja by zostac na noc w tarbert i nie zmuszac sie do wysilku jazdy pod wiatr 27mph poprzedniego popoludnia i wieczora.
obudzilysmy sie wczesnie (chyba widze tu jakas prawidlowosc..?) i kiedy wyszlysmy z hostelu zaraz oblecialy nas midges -te upierdliwe szkockie male muszki. no prawda, poprzednie dni byly bezmuszkowe bo zawsze wialo, a tego ranka bylo bardzo spokojnie wiec muszki zaraz wykorzystaly okazje by krwiozerczo sie do nas dobrac
no to narazie harris, bylo fajnie!

what was great about the hebrides in general, there was no need to lock bikes at all (neither for the night nor at the attractions/beaches). everybody was just leaving bikes and panniers wherever and they were safe. loved it
