HOY adventure

highlight of our orcadian hols :)
we planned a 15miles trek, with a sleepover in rackwick and here's how it went :)

.
.

przygoda na wyspie hoy, chyba najfajniesze miejsce ktore odwiedzilysmy na orkadach.
zaplanowalysmy trase okolo 20km, z noclegiem w rackwick...
i oto jak poszlo :)

well known landmarks -hills of hoy and graemsay hardly visible in the front.
crossing from stromness to moanness takes about 1 hr
it's a little, passengers only boat, max 73 people. that morning it was full
on its way back from moanness to stromness it stops on another island, graemsay

see you later stromness!   /  do zobaczenia stromness!

lighthouse on graemsay and hills of hoy behind
latarnia na wysepce graemsay i, z tylu, wzgorza wyspy hoy

we landed in moanness very excited. we had a good plan, route which we anticipated to be amazing and our inner batteries fully charged :) after leaving the pier we followed main road straight ahead (ignored the two roads forking to the left) and soon found ourselves on a track. by the way - all these people from boat-they disappeared! most of them took mini-buses to rackwick (easiest way to reach old man of hoy) and were already long gone when we reached old man of hoy. also, they all came back to stromness in the evening, but we had all time in the world as we intended to stay overnight on the island. so the crowd dissolved into thin air and only the two of us and a french group of about 6 (with a guide!) took different approach to visiting hoy :)
on the photo -cuilags, our first hill

bardzo podekscytowane wysiadlysmy z lodki, chetne by jak najszybciej zaczac przygode :) mialysmy dobry plan, trase ktora zdawala sie ciekawa i wewnetrzne baterie naladowane calkowicie :)
od przystani poszlysmy glowna droga, prosto przed siebie (ignorujac dwa rozwidlenia w lewo) i droga zmienila sie w trakt. wszyscy ludzie ktorzy plyneli z nami na hoy znikneli, jakby rozmyli sie w powietrzu - wiekszosc z nich wziela mini-busiki do rackwick (najlatwiejsza opcja odwiedzin old man of hoy, lub 'starca z hoy' po polsku) i wszyscy oni juz dawno sobie poszli kiedy my w koncu dotarlysmy do 'starca'. poza tym mysle ze wiekszosc z nich wracala do stromness jeszcze tego samego wieczoru, wiec byli moze nieco w pospiechu.. my nie spieszylysmy sie w ogole bo planowalysmy zostac na noc na wyspie. tak wiec tlum gdzies zniknal i tylko my dwie oraz szescioosobowa grupa francuzow (z przewodnikiem!) zwiedzala wyspe hoy inaczej..
na zdjeciu - cuilags, nasza pierwsza gorka

the track ended at sandy loch and we had to jump over the stream to start ascent (pathless). what can i say about ascent to cuilags summit. well, it's very steep and very wet. we really regretted not taking hiking poles as they would be of great help. the ground was so steep and wet that my feet were sliding down a bit, and i think that we all ended up on our knees at some point :)  so yeah, definitely take trekking poles to help to stabilise and balance yourselves.
everyone started very energised, but i could see that about 3/4 way up everyone was a bit tired by the gradient of ascent and mud.
on this photo we were about 1/3 way up. in background is island of graemsay and further the mainland; far right is scapa flow

ward hill (highest point of hoy, and orkney) and sandy loch
najwyzszy punkt wyspy hoy (i calych orkad) -ward hill 481mnpm i loch sandy

graemsay

all the effort was well rewarded with views  :)  typical orcadian view: water, green rolling hills and fields.
caly nasz wysilek byl szczodrze nagradzany pieknymi widokami. typowy widoczek na orkady: woda, zielone brzuchowate pagorki i pola

oh yeah, this one :) one of the french group had a camera as big as mine and was taking lots of photos, Bea said 'let's ask her if she would take a photo of us and the views, looks like she knows what she's doing'. i'm always reluctant to ask others to take photos of us, as we usually end up... just like here. our faces and no views... :(

aa, no ta fota... no wiec jedna z francuzek miala tez wielki aparat (tak jak my!) i cykala fotki na lewo i prawo. :(

moanness / graemsay / mainland

...then suddenly summit cairn came to view, and then suddenly we were all energised again!
.. i wtedy nagle zobaczylysmy szczyt! i wtedy nagle dostalysmy znow energii!

cuilags,      summit / szczyt

nice indeed, but let's move on :)    /    no ladnie ladnie, ale chodzmy juz dalej :)

that's rackwick, seen from cuilags. still long way away, as we're not just going there straight...

we really liked colours or late summer/early autumn. that's sui fea, our second hill of the day. as i mentioned, there are no paths there so we made our way straight across ... trying not to drown. it was really really wet.

from sui fea we walked straight down towards bre brough / st. john's head. these are highest cliffs in the uk. very impressive. nearby are hendry's holes. definitely worth visiting. basically they're a recess in the cliff (holes), look like cake :) they're a bit hidden, but go, find them. we thought them magical. it's like entering a secret world where the birds rule (fulmars!). the only sounds are sssshhhh.... made by fulmars' wings flying overhead (everywhere around really, coming closer and closer to have a good look at you)... and fulmars' cries. apart from that- total stillness. magic.
make sure you go there. i'm not sure how known it is but the guide didnt take the french there..

here's a short video to help you envision the place
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzLjG0SU138

st john's head

yay! at last we can see the old man of hoy!
no nareszcie, w koncu widac starca z hoy!

.. and there is a path along the cliffs (i promise!)
i jest sciezka! wzdloz klifow idzie sciezka!

one of many different photos of us and the old man of hoy :)
jedna z wielu roznych fotrk ktore zrobilysmy sobie ze starcem

so, here's the thing. we walked all this way so we want a decent photo of the old man. can we take it now? nope, it's overcast and disappointing. but guess what?! Bea strongly believes that if we wait some time (we're not in a hurry after all, we can camp right here if needed!) the sun will come out. and anyway, we're hungry. so we decided to have a dinner and see if the conditions improve :)

we called it 'the old man inn'  :)
nazwalysmy to miejsce 'karczama pod starcem'

the old man of hoy

cliffs

where we came from  /  stamtad przyszlysmy

.. wait wait?!?!? is this the SUNSHINE?!?
chwila chwila, czy to slonce wychodzi?!?!

yep, blue skies all over   /  no, blekitne niebo wszedzie dookola!

oh, have i mentioned that it was virtually impossible to take a picture without a fulmar flying straight into the frame?? jeeezzz, it really took several attempts sometimes to take a photo without a blurred fulmar right in the middle of it hahaha

yeah, Bea was right (of course she was, she's usually right about these things...)

we went above and beyond to take some decent photos of the old man of hoy, but it's only a sea stack, you can only do so much haha
the path then changes into a nice 'motorway of a path' and takes us over more cliffs, to rackwick

sciezka teraz zmienila sie w 'autostrade' i prowadzi nas, ponad kolejnymi klifami, do rackwick.

cliffs @ rackwick

rackwick, the village. this is it, all of it. there are only 5 people living all year round...
wioska rackwick, cala, to jest wszystko. calorocznych mieszkancow jest 5, slownie piec.

let's see it then! and find a spot to camp :)
no to idziemy wioske zobaczyc.. i znalezc jakies miejsce zeby sie rozbic

there is a beach in rackwick, with famous round, patterned pebbles. i've seen some great photos taken here.. but at low tide... no luck..

dwarfie stone

when we came down to the village we met.. how to say that.. we met a weirdo who lived in a tent pitched amongst ruins and claimed to be a 'somebody', he really freaked us out as he was very interested in us and where we sleep etc...
we also met Jimmy, the warden, who said 'oh that guy, yeah he's harmless but he really annoys people here' hahaha Jimmy is an elder guy whose kindness grabbed our hearts. we talked to him a bit and told him what way we come back to moanness the next day, the  Jimmy said 'oh that's a shame, you'll miss dwarfie stone! it's really unique, it would be a shame not to see it. look, it's only 10 mins drive away from here, jump into the car, i'll take you there now if you want, it would really be a shame to miss it'
and that's how we visited dwarfie stone :)

kiedy zeszlysmy do wioski spotkalysmy.. no wlasnie jak to powiedziec  - dziwaka, ktory mieszkal w namiocie rozbitym pomiedzy ruinami, byl bardzo nami zainteresowany, gdzie spimy itd, narobil nam niezlego stracha i stresa... ale.. potem spotkalysmy takze Jimmyego, straznika okolicy, ktory powiedzial 'aaa, tamten, no nie jest niebezpieczny, tylko wkurza wszystkich we wiosce'
jimmy to starszy facet, jego dobroc i duma ruszyly nasze serca. rozmawialysmy z nim jakis czas i powiedzialysmy jak wracamy do moanness nastepnego dnia i jimmy mowi 'no to szkoda, bo nie zobaczycie dwarfie stone' (kamien karzelka) jes naprawde unikatowy, strasznie byloby szkoda zebyscie go nie zobaczyly. sluchajcie, to jest tylko 10 minut jazdy stad, wskakujcie do samochodu, zabiore was tam teraz jesli chcecie, bo naprawde byloby szkoda nie zobaczyc'
i tak oto zobaczylysmy dwarfie stone :)

it is a monolith stone, with a bed and sitting area inside. neolithic.
jest to jeden kamien, wyzlobiony w srodku, jest tu lozko i 'salka'. neolityczny.

can you spot Jimmy's red van?   /  uda wam sie dopatrzyc czerwonego vana jimmiego?

och, we were there for the sunset :)
akurat bylysmy tam podczas zachodu slonca :)

rackwick bothy, our accomodation for the night. Jimmy really insisted we slept in a bothy rather than camp outside as night forecast was rain :) and the bothy was really decent - with toilet and running water!

rackwick beach

the bothy again :)    /  i jeszcze jedna fotka schroniska

good night   /  dobranoc!

in the morning we walked from rackwick to moanness. it's 6.5km (4.5miles)
there is a path (aka a river)

heather colour was spectacular!  /  niesamowite kolory wrzosow
